A GUIDE TO 4x4 OFF-ROAD SUSPENSION & LIFT KITS

ARB Old Man Emu, OME, Suspension, Lift Kit, Differential Cover, Dealer North & West Vancouver, Vancouver, Burnaby, New West, Richmond, North Shore, British Columbia, BC, Lower Mainland

In off-roading, suspension lift kits are usually a necessity more than luxury. While their powerful aesthetic is often reason enough to install a lift kit on your truck or Jeep, the performance and safety enhancements achieved from modifying your suspension are the real off-roaders’ reasons to consider them.

    Raising Your Vehicle

Off-roading suspension modifications are usually done to raise your vehicle’s height via lift-kits. Lift kits either extend or replace your stock suspension and add height to your truck or Jeep’s clearance. When driving in non-standard and off-road conditions, lift kits protect your vehicle’s undercarriage from unnecessary damage when going over rocks and boulders or through rough terrain. The extra clearance also helps to keep more sensitive components of your vehicle from being submersed when going through deep water and muddy terrain. Lifting your vehicle can also increase approach and descent angles.

Suspension lift kits also give extra space between your axle and truck’s body & wheel-wells. This allows for larger off-road tires to be installed and ultimately gives more flexibility in where your truck is capable of going, giving your more choice in where you take your off-road adventures. Additionally, dependent on the kit and specifications, lift kits can help give you a smoother ride than stock suspension – on any terrain, on- or off-road. By adjusting for a softer-riding suspension you can minimize the banging, knocking and impact from driving on rough streets, wild terrain, and corrugated and washboarded roads and paths.

Truck & Jeep Suspension for Performance

While suspension modifications can increase clearance of the vehicle, they are also done to improve handling and performance depending on your needs. Suspension kits allow for customization of the tightness of your ride depending on your truck’s primary utility. Premium suspension kits also allow for adjustments and variations depending on your needs at any given time.

A tighter suspension will often be chosen for racing and high-performance driving that requires tight turns at fast speeds or minimal bounce on straightaways. While having a looser suspension can help with off-roading to minimize impact and give a comfortable ride, if too soft it can often cause too much bounce at high speeds, being detrimental to your control or handling. Having a wobbly and bouncy drive at high speeds and turns causes unnecessary handling issues and reduces your control when you need it most.

Depending on your primary needs the suspension can be adjusted in shop permanently. Or, if you choose a premium kit you can adjust it yourself for various uses.

Suspension Kits for Loads & Carrying Weight

If you are accustomed to carrying heavy loads on your truck or Jeep, then you may already understand the importance of a lift kit for load carrying. Lift kits can help to increase the overall load your vehicle can carry and can often be chosen with much greater weight-bearing capacity than most off the lot stock suspensions. They add additional support and resistance preventing vehicle sag. The additional height also gives that extra clearance allowing the truck to sink without causing damage or rubbing tires.

If you are doing extensive modifications to your truck or Jeep, you may also consider suspension upgrades as they can often add weight that your vehicle’s stock suspension is not designed for. Additionally, if towing trailers or machinery, modified suspension will give you that extra peace of mind knowing you can load up up and go off-road where necessary.
